A genuinely traditional village with thatched bures, photogenic Navala 1 [map] provides an amazing cultural experience, but you must observe the correct etiquette. Don’t turn up on a Sunday, don’t wear a hat and, when you arrive, ask the first people you meet for directions to the chief. Fijian courtesy requires visitors to request permission to look around and take photographs, and this should be accompanied by a gift of F$15 and 1kg (2lb) of yaqona (the mildly narcotic powdered root of the piper mysthisticum plant) to the turaga IIi koro (village headman).

Visits here will include food and usually a traditional kava ceremony. Make contact before you leave, and be aware that you might need to be tenacious to get a response. You may also be able to enjoy a cool dip in the river, and experience paddling a biribiri (bamboo raft).
